Three Emmys to Germany
Christiane Paul wins the Emmy as best actress, and two other German TV productions also pick up awards in New York.
New York (dpa) - German TV series "Deutschland 83" won best drama at the International Emmys in New York on Monday, snagging one of the most prestigious awards in the industry. The Cold War drama, which garnered praise from critics abroad but was only a minor success at home, follows young East German soldier Martin Rauch after he is forced to go to West Germany as a spy.
Starring 26-year-old Jonas Nay, the series was sold to 38 international broadcasters and streaming services. Despite its international success, the series rapidly lost viewers at home, with only 1.63 million viewers tuning in for the final episode broadcast in December, just 5.3 per cent of the market.
Nevertheless, a second season has been commissioned and is due to air in 2018. Meanwhile, German actress Christiane Paul won best actress for her role in the television film "Unterm Radar" ("Under the Radar"), beating British actress Judi Dench among others. "It's crazy," the 42-year-old told dpa. "It's the biggest thing that's ever happened to me." German director Matthias Bittner's film "Krieg der Luegen" ("War of Lies") scooped the award for best documentary.
The film, which focuses on the run-up to the Iraq war, started out as a film school project. "No German film festival wanted to show this film," Bittner told dpa. "Finally you end in the US, which this film is actually all about."
