“We want to offer a ray of light or two”

German actor Til Schweiger has set up a foundation with which he wants to support refugees

Bicycle workshops, sports facilities and a sewing studio –
or simply four trucks full of ice cream on a hot day: German actor Til Schweiger has set up a foundation to support
refugees and create a few “rays of light”. The Til Schweiger Foundation has prominent supporters, among them national football coach Joachim Löw, Deputy Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel, musician Thomas D and actor Jan Josef Liefers.
Media reports say that Schweiger has already raised a quarter of a million euros in donations: He intends to contribute 100,000 euros himself, Thomas D has pledged the same amount and Jogi Löw is said to be donating 25,000 euros from his Sports Foundation.

The foundation is destined to make life in refugee shelters more tolerable. As the construction of the shelter Schweiger has planned for Osterode in Lower Saxony has been delayed, the foundation will initially concentrate on supporting a
refugee reception centre in Osnabrück. Schweiger plans to provide the facility with a workshop and free WiFi and to hire teachers of German for it.
