“It’s an important issue, which affects everyone and on which everyone should take a stand”, says Hossein Nasseri. The 28-year-old is referring to civil courage. As district ambassador in Frankfurt-Sossenheim, he encourages young people to intervene in conflicts and shows them how they can thereby avoid becoming themselves victims. There are district ambassadors like Nasseri, whose projects enrich communal life, in almost all Frankfurt’s districts. Their engagement is made possible by the Polytechnic Society Foundation.

200th anniversary of the Founders Award

Founded in 2005, the Frankfurt chapter is the most recent of numerous foundations that the Polytechnic Society has launched in its long history. In 1816 it was created by Frankfurt citizens with the aim of promoting the diverse abilities of people.

Over the past 200 years, it has continually responded to the latest developments and launched new initiatives. Some are now carried on by the city or have been dissolved; others remain. Today, in addition to the Polytechnic Society, the “Polytechnic family” includes six offspring: The Frankfurt Foundation for the Blind and Visually Impaired, the Arts and Crafts Society of Frankfurt am Main, the Institute of Apiculture, the Frankfurt Cultural Advisory Board, the Association for the Promotion of Chamber Music and Young Musicians, and the Wöhler Foundation, which sponsors a school.

The engagement of the “polytechnicians” is highly valued: in 2016, the 200th year of its existence, the Society has been awarded the German Founders Award. “Apparently, the Polytechnic Society already anticipated in its establishment what urgently matters in urban societies in the twenty-first century: long-term action in favour of diversity and cohesion”, said the Chairman of the Association of German Foundations, Michael Göring.
