Appealing German metropolitan regions and major cities like Frankfurt am Main and Munich are attracting more and more people. The Federal Government has decided to put the brakes on rents to ensure that housing remains affordable despite the influx of people. The aim is to prevent rent increases of 20–30% or more – and to make sure that people on average incomes can still afford to live
in popular areas. The new regulations stipulate that when existing apartments or houses are re-let the rent may not go up by more than 10% compared to the local average rent. State governments can designate areas with tight housing markets for rent-control measures.
