Berlin (dpa) - Authorities in the German capital have marked the first anniversary Tuesday of a terrorist attack on a Christmas market in the western centre of Berlin in which 12 people died.

Relatives of the victims of the attack unveiled a memorial at Breitscheidplatz square. The 17-metre-long line of bronze in the ground is meant to symbolize the wound the attack left behind in the lives of the victims' loved ones.

Additionally, the names of the victims have been engraved in the steps of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church which is located at the square.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Chancellor Angela Merkel and several government officials took part in a series of memorials on Tuesday including a service at the church.

On Monday, in the chancellery, Merkel received family members of people killed in the attack. The meeting lasted longer than the allocated two hours.
