Well over 100 people lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday night. Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier commented in the course of the night using social media: “We stand at France’s side,” Steinmeier tweeted. He was among the spectators in Stade de France watching the friendly between the French and German football teams when the attacks happened. The bombs exploded in the immediate proximity of the stadium. “What started as a celebration of football ended in a terrorist inferno,” Steinmeier said on Saturday on the fringes of the Syria Conference in Vienna. “We stand firmly at the side of our French friends.”

On Saturday morning German Chancellor Angela Merkel commented on the attacks: “This attack on freedom is an attack on us all,” she stated. For this reason, everyone together would provide the answer. “We, your German friends, feel very close to you”, she said, addressing the French. “We are crying with you.”
