Cortina d'Ampezzo/Tesero (dpa/d.de) - The 14th Winter Paralympics drew to a close in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo on Sunday evening. During the games in Northern Italy, Germany picked up 17 medals in all, putting it in eleventh place in the medals table. With 40 athletes and eight guides, Team Germany was bigger than at any Winter Paralympics since the 1994 Lillehammer Games. In total, Germany brought home two gold, six silver and nine bronze medals.

“What a festival of top-level sport – our amazing team won a total of 17 medals for Germany at the Paralympic Games. Congratulations and many thanks for these thrilling competitions,” wrote Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Instagram. Germany’s most outstanding athlete was Anna-Lena Forster, who scooped gold in both the downhill and giant slalom, plus silver in the alpine combined. The most assiduous medal collectors were the Nordic athletes in the cross-country and biathlon, where Anja Wicker earned her fourth medal on the final day after coming second in the 20 km race.
