Chemnitz (dpa) - In Chemnitz, the European Capital of Culture, the German Environmental Award will be presented today (Sunday). Endowed with half a million euros, the award will go to a Swiss climate researcher and a company from North Rhine-Westphalia for its resource-efficient steel galvanisation technique. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will be presenting the prize at the Stadthalle in Chemnitz.

Swiss scientist Sonia Isabelle Seneviratne is being awarded the prize in Chemnitz for her climate research. According to the DBU, Seneviratne, who is a professor at ETH Zürich and vice president of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), has produced new insights into the way the climate system works - especially concerning how soil humidity, plants and the atmosphere influence one another. One of the reasons the German steel galvanisation company Zinq is receiving the award is for developing an innovative galvanisation technique (“microZINQ”) that saves resources and energy in the area of corrosion protection.

The German Environmental Award is presented by the German Federal Environment Foundation (DBU) each year to honour decisive and exemplary achievements for the protection and preservation of the environment. According to the DBU, it is one of Europe’s most highly endowed environmental prizes.
