Dessau celebrates 100 years of the Bauhaus
Dessau opens doors, serves up a specially created beer and celebrates 100 years of Bauhaus in the town.

Dessau-Roßlau (dpa) - The hosts, the beer and the programme of events are all ready – starting today, the Bauhaus in Dessau is celebrating its 100th anniversary. “We are excited because we are now launching something that we have been working intensively to prepare for years,” says Bauhaus Director Barbara Steiner.
Exhibitions, an artistic programme, conferences and festivities are all planned. Beer created especially for the occasion will even be served - Bauhaus beer. For the anniversary, buildings that have previously been closed to the public will be made accessible.
The Bauhaus was founded in 1919 by the architect Walter Gropius (1883-1969) in the Thuringian town of Weimar. Due to political circumstances (the conservative government in Thuringia believed that the school had communist leanings), the institution moved to Dessau one hundred years ago.
In 1926, the Bauhaus Dessau attained official status as a university of design. In 1932 it moved from Dessau to Berlin, where it was shut down by the Nazis in 1933.
The Bauhaus is known in particular for the furniture, lamps, jewellery and everyday objects it produced. From Weimar, Dessau and Berlin, the school’s reach extends across the world - as a Unesco World Heritage site.
