Brussels (dpa) – Despite a pending review by the Court of Justice of the European Union, the free trade agreement between the EU and the South American Mercosur states will be applied shortly. This was announced by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels. The agreement was previously ratified by the governments of the Mercosur states Uruguay and Argentina on Thursday, thereby paving the way for this step. The Mercosur agreement would create a market with 720 million people and cut tariffs worth billions, said von der Leyen. opening up markets for companies on a scale they could previously only have dreamed of.

The Federal Government welcomed the announcement and continues to advocate the provisional application of the agreement, saying it would mean businesses on both sides could benefit earlier. The agreement on the EU-Mercosur deal is said to be a milestone in European trade policy and an important signal of its strategic sovereignty and ability to act, strengthening the European and German economies and boosting trade relations with partners in South America.
