Berlin (dpa) - The majority of district authorities and cities in Germany have reported only very few or even no new cases of the novel coronavirus over the past week, according to the country's disease control agency.

The good news came from the Robert Koch Institute and was accurate as of early Monday, although officials warned that there could be regional delays in reporting the data.

Around 50 districts reported no new infections over a seven-day period, while another 220 areas confirmed five or fewer cases per 100,000 residents.

Easing the anti-coronavirus restrictions put in place in mid-March has been left up to the country's 16 states, after Chancellor Angela Merkel ditched efforts earlier this month to coordinate a nationwide response.

However, she insisted on a cap that would force restrictions again if 50 or more new cases per 100,000 people were confirmed over the course of a week in local districts.
