Berlin/Warsaw (d.de) – Germany and Poland are set to further deepen their cooperation in defence and security policy. Defence Minister Boris Pistorius is travelling to Warsaw today to sign a joint defence agreement. “In doing so, we’re strengthening our shared security and sending out a clear signal that reflects the close partnership between our two countries,” said Pistorius. The agreement reaffirms the mutual assistance commitments of the two countries within NATO and the EU, and provides for closer cooperation in the development of military capabilities and in the defence industry.

“This is a very important sign of increasingly close cooperation not only in military matters but also more broadly on security policy,” said Knut Abraham, the German government's coordinator for Poland, adding that there were “no coordination problems” when it came to support for Ukraine. The two countries remained firmly committed to supporting Ukraine in the face of Russia’s aggression, he said.

The agreement is being signed in Warsaw on the 35th anniversary of the German-Polish Neighbourship Treaty of 1991.
