Berlin (dpa) – Science, technology, engineering and mathematics are the subjects in which Germany produces more graduates than any other OECD country. This is revealed by the OECD’s annual report “Education at a Glance”. 35 percent of those who graduate with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Germany have studied one of these STEM subjects. According to the report, this is the highest proportion among the OECD countries (the average being 23 percent).

When presenting the OECD study in Berlin yesterday, German Research Minister Dorothee Bär emphasised that Germany was a highly qualified STEM country and a world champion in the STEM subjects.

The annual study contains a comprehensive set of data on the education systems of the member states and other partner countries. It shows how much money is spent on education in each, what the student-to-teacher ratio is in educational institutions, how big school classes are and how high the costs of doing a degree are.

In the international competition for young researchers, the German higher education system is scoring ever more highly. According to the study, the proportion of foreign students has risen significantly, from 7.1 percent in 2013 to 12.7 percent in 2023. The average OECD figure is 7.4 percent. Students from Asia are the largest group, accounting for 44 percent of the total, while 31 percent come from other European countries.
