Germany to provide Pakistan with 90 million dollars in support
Its contribution to the billions of UN aid in wake of catastrophic flooding
Geneva (dpa) - Pakistan has received billions of dollars in financial pledges for reconstruction after the devastating floods. At a UN conference in Geneva on Monday, pledges totalling more than 9 billion dollars were made to help Pakistan, the Pakistani government reported. These are new funds, the state secretary at the Foreign Ministry stressed.
Germany promised another 90 million dollars (84 million euros) for the construction of rainwater retention basins and drainage systems, for example. Even more could be made available during the course of the year, said Jochen Flasbarth, state secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. Like many donor countries, he urged Pakistan to implement reforms to advance the economy.
