Rome (dpa/d.de) – On his inaugural visit to Italy, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for Italy to be more closely involved in European efforts to end the war in Ukraine. After meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome, Merz said: “We agreed that Italy has to play a role here.” He noted that there was broad agreement on virtually all European policy matters. “We want to work together for a strong, secure and competitive Europe, so so I’m very grateful, Giorgia, that we were able to establish close contact within the first few days,” said Merz, adding that

Italy was an “indispensable strategic partner. Merz and Meloni committed to resuming German-Italian government consultations next year. The two leaders agreed that closer cooperation was needed within the EU to curb irregular migration. “We won’t be hitting the brakes any more when it comes to solving the European Union’s problems,” said Merz.

Merz is in Rome for the inauguration of the new pope, Leo XIV, which will take place on Sunday in St. Peter’s Square. Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil, Bundestag President Julia Klöckner and Bundesrat President Anke Rehlinger will also be in attendance.
