Merkel attends trade summit
German Chancellor Angela Merkel calls for free world trade during the Asia-European Meeting.
Berlin (dpa) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel stressed the importance of free world trade at the Asia-European Meeting (ASEM) in Brussels.
"The summit shows that countries from Europe and Asia are gathered here who want rule-based world trade and who are committed to multilateralism. And this is an important signal," Merkel said Friday. "We can send a sign that in the world it is about creating a win-win situation."
Merkel stressed the importance of the two-day Asem parley, in which around 50 countries including China, Russia and Japan are represented, comprising roughly two-thirds of the world's population, world trade and global domestic product.
