Germany supports millions of people worldwide
The German development agency GIZ is active in 120 countries, working to promote prosperity and security. Yesterday it published its 2024 annual report.

Berlin (dpa/d.de) – Millions of people around the world benefited from Germany’s international cooperation efforts last year. The German development agency GIZ supported 2.2 million refugees and internally displaced people in 2024, working alongside its partners, the organisation announced yesterday in Berlin. “The GIZ works with and for its partners to promote sustainable prosperity, peace and security around the globe – and as a result in Germany, too,” said GIZ board spokesperson Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel.
According to the annual report presented, 2.5 million people were able to improve their incomes, while 15.1 million gained access – or improved access – to a modern supply of energy.
Germany’s support for poorer countries is a matter of solidarity, said Niels Annen, Chair of the GIZ Supervisory Board and State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. But it also benefits Germany, he said – for example in the recruitment of skilled workers, in trade and energy supply, and in securing political support for German initiatives at the United Nations.
The GIZ’s business volume last year stood at just under four billion euros, roughly the same as the previous year. A total of 24,530 people from 153 countries work for the GIZ, two-thirds of whom are local staff based in around 120 countries.
