“Peacekeepers are the face of Germany’s external operations”
German experts, police offices and soldiers are involved in peacekeeping missions in crisis areas around the world. They were now honoured by the Federal Government for their commitment.
Berlin (dpa) – The German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul praised German civilian experts, police officers and soldiers for their participation in international peacekeeping missions. At the Day of Peacekeeping at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, he said that in their role as peacekeepers, they were the face of Germany’s external operations and made these activities more tangible.
Among the individuals honoured this year were an expert for foreign and security policy who addresses the issue of disinformation by Russia in Kosovo, as well as promoting societal resilience. Awards were also presented to the responsible officer for security management at the Rafah crossing point between the southern Gaza Strip and Egypt, and a German staff member of the EU advisory mission EUAM in Ukraine, who is involved in prosecuting crimes in connection with Russia’s war of aggression.
Germany is currently involved in international peacekeeping missions with just under 2,100 people. German federal police officers have been taking part in peacekeeping and peacebuilding missions in different crisis areas around the world since 1989. Bundeswehr soldiers are also involved in international peacekeeping missions. These are generally organised in the context of multi-lateral alliances and organisations, such as the United Nations, Nato or the European Union.
