Hamburg (dpa) - Germany and other North Sea neighbouring states want to push forward with expanding off-shore wind farms. According to the Hamburg Declaration signed by leaders at the North Sea Summit, the North Sea is to become “the world’s largest clean energy reservoir”. Above all, cross-border cooperation on wind parks is to be stepped up. This is make expansion more efficient and lower costs.

Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz said: “The decisions we have taken here in Hamburg today will make our energy supply more secure, cheaper and more integrated.” The Declaration was signed by Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, France and the United Kingdom, as well as by Ireland and Luxembourg.

Expanding wind power in the North Sea is also designed to make Europe more independent of other energy supplies. In Hamburg, the North Sea neighbouring states concluded an investment pact with the wind industry and with grid operators. The conditions for investment are to be improved. By 2030, 9.5 billion euros is to be invested in new production capacities in Europe, thousands of new wind farms installed and 91,000 additional jobs created.
