Scholz and Macron stress Franco-German friendship
60th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty: Celebration with ministers and MPs in Paris
Paris (dpa) - Germany and France have stressed the importance of their friendship for the future of Europe on the 60th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty. French President Emmanuel Macron said at a ceremony at the Sorbonne University in Paris that Germany and France were in his view like “two souls in the same body”. “For a Frenchman to talk about Germany is to talk about a part of himself,” he told more than 30 ministers from both governments and around 200 parliamentarians.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) thanked the “French brothers and sisters” in French for their friendship. He emphasised “our firm will to transform controversies and differences of interest into concerted action time and again.” The ceremony was accompanied by a joint cabinet meeting.
