Success in the ice track: Germany’s Olympic medal tally
Germany has ended the Winter Games in fifth place - with some strong performances, especially in the ice track.
Milan/Cortina d'Ampezzo (dpa/d.de) - The 25th Winter Olympics ended yesterday (Sunday) with a closing ceremony in Verona.
Germany came fifth in the medals table of the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. Germany’s athletes won eight gold, ten silver and eight bronze medals.
The German team gave an outstanding performance in the ice track: the luge, skeleton and bobsleigh athletes picked up nearly three quarters of the medals in the Cortina Sliding Centre.
Lugers Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt made history at the Winter Olympics: at the games, which will now be their last, they scooped bronze in the doubles and gold in the team relay. Since the 2014 Winter Games, this brings their total to seven gold medals and one bronze - making them Germany’s most successful Winter Olympians.
Wendl and Arlt carried the German flag at the closing ceremony in Verona: “It was a lifelong goal of ours to lead the German team as flag bearers. The fact that we have now been able to achieve this at the end of our Olympic careers is worth at least as much as our Olympic victory here.”
