From Berlin via Osaka to Saarbrücken

National elections, enjoying art and celebrating unity – these are some of the events that await those interested in Germany in 2025.

Are you interested in Germany and what’s going on here? We present some of the most important dates in 2025: 

18 January: Chemnitz opens the year as European Capital of Culture with an all-day programme. The city in Saxony is planning over 1,000 events in 2025.  

13 – 23 February: The Berlinale will be held for the 75th time. The Berlin International Film Festival is one of the largest film festivals in the world. 

23 February: Germany elects a new Bundestag. Early elections became necessary following the collapse of the coalition between the SPD, Greens and FDP under Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Otherwise the elections would not have taken place until September. 

13 April – 13 October: Expo in Osaka, Japan. Germany is represented there with the spectacular pavilion “Wa! Germany”. It is dedicated to the circle in every respect – in its title, its form, its exhibition and its concept. 

8 May: 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Nazi Germany started the Second World War by invading Poland on 1 September 1939. The war ended on 8 May 1945 with Germany’s unconditional surrender.  

31 May: Champions League final at the stadium in Munich. The football event of the year. 

3 October: 35 years of German reunification. The unification celebrations will be organised by Saarbrücken, capital of the Saarland.  

24 October: 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations: the UN Charter came into force on this day. Supporting the UN is one of the primary goals of German foreign policy. 

26 November – 14 December: Women’s Handball World Championship in Germany and the Netherlands. Matches are planned in cities such as Stuttgart, Trier and Dortmund.
