ONLINE HISTORY PROJECT. It is a huge
virtual archive and it is constantly growing: Europeana 1914–1918 is an online platform that provides access to memories of the First World War. The materials it contains – letters, photos, films,
diaries, flyers, postcards and official documents – come from state libraries, film collections and private homes in
20 countries. Families have portrayed their own personal histories and can continue to do so. The project hits a nerve, said Minister of State for Culture Monika Grütters when the system first went live. “It brings light to this period
of darkness and destruction by providing access to hundreds of thousands of documents and objects from all over
Europe – from private photographs to documentary film recordings.”
