Voluntary efforts

Cultural preservation, remembrance and promoting sport: Germany does a lot to promote initiatives in the fields of culture, sport and voluntary work.

Culture of remembrance: For commemorating and remembering

The responsibility bequeathed to Germany by the past is an unshakable pillar of how the country sees itself today, and defines its present and future. “Stolpersteine” is one of the most impressive initiatives – a European art project by Gunter Demnig.

Preserving culture: To conserve our cultural heritage

Places such as the Sistani House in the citadel in Bam, Iran (photo) are outstanding testimony to human history. The Federal Foreign Office works closely with international and local experts and helps to preserve our cultural heritage worldwide, which is threatened by natural disasters, decay, or political crises.

Don’t look away

Observers are highly concerned by illegal excavations and trade, and the destruction of cultural assets. “We should not look away, as this is not a problem simply of countries in crisis,” says Hermann Parzinger, President of Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz.

Cultural exchange: For a dialogue with no borders

Art and culture touch people’s hearts directly, forging intercultural understanding across all borders. Vibrant and open cultural exchange can help build important bridges of understanding.

“Today, intercultural dialogue and assuming responsibility are more important than ever.” Klaus-Dieter Lehmann, President of Goethe-Institut

Promoting sport: For more fairness and tolerance

There are many favourable sides to sport, including its ability to promote education, health, development and peace. The Federal Foreign Office’s international sports promotion programme and German economic cooperation schemes often rely on sports projects to energize people and foster social and economic inclusion. 118,665 young people in Africa have participated in the “Youth Development through Football”, which Germany supports.

Initiatives: For voluntary efforts

“Go out into the world!” Since Germany first launched the “Weltwärts” programme in 2008 a total of some 20,000 volunteers have heeded the call. And “kulturweit”, a project run by the German UNESCO Commission and the Federal Foreign Office, takes committed young men and women abroad as volunteers.
