Chemnitz (dpa) – Angst and loneliness: the Chemnitz art collections “Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz” have dedicated a comprehensive exhibition to the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (1863–1944) and the themes he focussed on throughout his life. The curators have compiled 140 works of art, including close to 100 pieces by Munch himself, as well as pieces that relate to Munch’s paintings and graphics and were created by other artists, such as Andy Warhol, Neo Rauch and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff.

Alongside Munch’s world-famous composition “The Scream” that is shown as a lithography, another painting is returning to Chemnitz for the first time: “Two People. The Lonely Ones.” The artwork that had been purchased for the collection in 1928 was sold by the National Socialists in 1937.

Munch is considered an important pioneer of modern art. In 1905 he spent a few weeks in Chemnitz. While there, he created a number of paintings and drawings, two of which are shown in the exhibition.

Chemnitz and Nova Gorica in Slovenia are this year’s European Capitals of Culture. The Munch exhibition titled “Angst” (shown until 2 November 2025) is considered one of the programme highlights.
