Berlin (dpa) - To mark international Labour Day on 1 May, trade unions and other organisations - also in Germany - are calling on people to take part in hundreds of demonstrations and events. The German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) is using the slogan “Mach dich stark mit uns!” (Make yourself strong with us!) to urge employees to demand higher wages and better working conditions

The first of May is a special public holiday for many people. Trade unions call on their members to commit to more rights for employees. The first of May was established as a “day of struggle of the workers’ movement” in 1890. People around the world continue to mark this day by demonstrating for workers’ rights.
