Los Angeles (dpa) – The German director Jens Kevin Georg is among the winners of this year’s Student Oscars. The 30-year-old graduate of Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf in Potsdam picked up the prestigious award for his short film “Crust”.
The Oscar Academy in Los Angeles announced the winners of the 51st student competition on Tuesday. Twelve films by the next generation of directors received honours. In 2024, the competition received 2,683 entries from over 700 schools and universities around the world. The trophies for the winning short films in the four different categories will be presented in London on 14 October.
In a film that lasts just under half an hour, Jens Kevin Georg tells a story of growing up, identity and belonging. “Crust” is inspired by Franz Kafka’s famous short story “Metamorphosis”, and Georg describes it as an “outsider’s story”. Georg’s parents are of German origin, and migrated to Germany from Romania. As a child with migrant heritage, Georg has a very special connection to the topic.
