Germany adopts new climate action programme
Wind turbines, mixed forests and climate-friendly fuels are among the issues the Federal Government seeks to address more intensively.
Berlin (d.de) – The Federal Cabinet has adopted the 2026 climate action programme presented by Environment Minister Carsten Schneider. The programme comprises 67 measures designed to reduce annual carbon emissions by an additional 25 million tonnes by 2030. “This programme will give the issue of climate action new momentum and will reduce our dependency on expensive and unreliable oil and gas imports,” Carsten Schneider said.
He continued by saying that the programme would enable Germany to reduce its natural gas consumption by some seven billion cubic metres by 2030, as well as using around four billion litres less petrol. The number of wind turbines for which calls for tender are to be launched has been increased by around 2,000 compared to previous plans. There is also going to be a new funding programme for around 800,000 electric cars, as well as additional support to help industry switch to modern air-conditioning technology.
23 of the measures are related to forests, moors and soil, aiming to combat climate change more effectively. An additional total of eight billion euros will be made available for the new measures over the next four years.
