Germany and China - partners and competitors

Beijing (dpa, d.de) - German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider is in China for a three-day visit. He is meeting with the Chinese environment minister and other government representatives in Beijing to discuss matters relating to environmental and climate policy.
While in China, Schneider wants to learn more about current developments in emission trading, clean technologies and decarbonisation of the economy.
“China and Germany have many common interests in these areas. In the fight against climate change, we are partners first and foremost. We are also competitors when it comes to technology leadership in future industries. It’s crucial for this competition to be fair,” said Schneider.
China is not only the world’s largest CO2 emitter and plastics producer, but also one of the countries with the greatest biodiversity. China is also proving that the clean tech sector can drive growth: in 2025, clean technologies such as electric vehicles, solar power and storage systems already accounted for more than eleven percent of China’s GDP.
