Germany helps Ukraine through harsh winter
Germany is providing another 60 million euros to support Ukraine in its battle against targeted Russian attacks on energy supply infrastructure.
Berlin (AFP, dpa, d.de) In view of the ongoing Russian attacks, Germany plans to step up its support for those affected in Ukraine. This was announced by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul in Berlin: “We have mobilised another 60 million euros, which is our commitment to keeping the population in Ukraine warm and safe.” The UK government is also providing assistance. It is making 20 million pounds (23 million euros) available to protect the supply of energy.
Wadephul added that it was important for the US to continue its efforts to bring Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiation table. He therefore welcomed reports that US special envoy Steve Witkoff would be travelling to Moscow again soon.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote on X that he very much welcomed the additional aid package that had been announced. “We value Germany’s steadfast solidarity,” wrote Sybiha. The money is to be used to strengthen heating and heat supply systems in Ukraine, especially in frontline regions.
Ukraine has seen freezing conditions for several days, with nighttime temperatures dropping to minus 20 in some cases. At the same time, the Russian military’s systematic missile and drone attacks on energy infrastructure have caused electricity and district heat outages in large parts of the country. The situation is particularly severe in the capital Kyiv, where there have been emergency shutdowns of electricity for days.
