Berlin (d.de) - Russia’s war against Ukraine has increased the importance of the Artic to German security policy. In response, the Government has approved an updated German Artic Policy. This include Germany’s readiness to take greater responsibility for the Arctic region. Germany’s Arctic policy prioritises regional and international security, defending international rules-based order and international collaboration, protecting the environment and climate, science and research, sustainable development, and upholding the rights of the indigenous population of the Arctic.

Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stressed that the Arctic was central to European security. For this reason, Germany is supporting its EU and NATO partners in the region to help defend shared security interests. “The climate crisis is particularly clear in the Arctic, as that region is warming up to four times faster than other regions around the world, and the global impacts are grave,” said Baerbock. For this reason, she said, “thriving scientific cooperation in the Arctic, whether that involves researching the atmosphere, ice, seas or coasts, is of unique significance.”
