Iran conflict: Germany willing in principle to commit
Following talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Johann Wadephul sees Germany and the US as being in agreement on the Iran conflict.
Vaux-de-Cernay (dpa, d.de) – German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul also talked with his counterpart Marco Rubio during the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in France. Wadephul described the exchange as “friendly” and “constructive, but of course also reflecting the seriousness of the whole situation”. He said that the security situation was difficult enough and that steps had to be taken to prevent any escalation.
There was also discussion of a possible involvement of Germany’s armed forces, the Bundeswehr. Wadephul stressed that the US was currently not making any request of Germany to make a military contribution before the end of the hostilities. He said that there was no fundamental dissent between Germany and the US.
At an event in Berlin, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Germany would be willing to make a military contribution once the war was over. For example, the deployment of German minesweepers would be conceivable, assuming this took place under a collective mandate of the United Nations, NATO and the European Union and was approved by the German Bundestag, said Merz. This was partly in response to US President Donald Trump’s latest criticism of Germany’s failure to help secure the Strait of Hormuz.
