Berlin (dpa) – In efforts to bring the Iran war to an end, preparations are under way for a direct meeting between US and Iranian representatives in Pakistan, according to Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. He described this as “first signs of hope and confidence”.

Wadephul is meeting G7 foreign ministers today in Vaux-de-Cernay, France, to discuss a way out of the Iran war. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is also attending the second day of talks.

Wadephul reaffirmed Germany’s openness to helping secure shipping in the strait between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula: “If this war ends, Germany is prepared in principle to consider whether we can help secure shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.”

At the current meeting of the Group of Seven alliance – which, alongside Germany, includes France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Canada and the United States – discussions will also focus on limiting the economic consequences of the war.
