Bremerhaven (dpa/d.de) – Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has described the port of Bremerhaven as a key hub for Germany’s trade and security policy. On his inaugural visit to Bremen on Tuesday, Merz said the site was “indispensable” to the Federal Republic and of “outstanding importance” for military cooperation as well.

“Bremerhaven is a central junction for our exports, for our supply security and for international cooperation,” the Federal Chancellor said, adding that economic strength, security policy and infrastructure were closely interlinked. Merz called on the federal and Länder governments to invest jointly in the port’s future viability.

He praised Bremerhaven’s efficiency and capacity, highlighting how critical infrastructure was protected by means of close cooperation between all those involved. Merz said that the port played a vital role in international goods transport and in connecting Germany logistically to global markets.

At the end of his visit, the Federal Chancellor spoke to dockworkers and representatives of the state government about current challenges facing the maritime sector.
