Lisbon (dpa) - Portugal took over the EU Council Presidency from Germany for six months at the turn of the year. With the motto "Time for action: for a just, green and digital reconstruction", the left-wing government in Lisbon is taking up the objectives of the European Union's multi-billion Corona aid package. "It is an honour and an enormous responsibility for Portugal to take the baton from Germany and Chancellor Angela Merkel," wrote head of government António Costa on Twitter.

The challenges remain the same as in the past six months: coping with the Corona pandemic with the vaccination campaign and the beginning implementation of the EU aid package worth billions. In addition, there are the problems resulting from Brexit. Portugal names the intensification of the EU's relations with Africa as its own priority. Portugal is taking over the Council Presidency for the fourth time.
