Steinmeier is backing the new Pope as a bridge-builder.
German President wishes Pope Leo XIV “strength, love and prudence” for his office.

Berlin/Rome (dpa) - German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has sent a congratulatory message to the new Pope Leo XIV to express sincere good wishes. “The people in Germany, especially Catholics, are looking forward to your pontificate with great expectation and heartfelt unity”, the message states. In this office as Successor to Peter, Leo XIV is seen to be assuming significant spiritual and moral responsibility at a time marked by unrest and far-reaching global challenges. “May your personal disposition as a bridge-builder between the United States of America and the countries of Latin America assist you in giving voice to the concerns and hopes of people around the world”, wrote Steinmeier.
