The German economy is doing well, but it could be doing even better – business in almost one in two companies was held back in the spring of 2022 by a lack of skilled workers. And the shortage of skilled workers hit an all-time high in the manufacturing sector. These are the findings of the semi-annual 'skilled labour barometer' published by the state development bank KfW. Another study found a shortage of around 320,000 skilled workers, specialists and academics in the fields of mathematics, information technology, natural sciences and technology in April 2020.

Which skills are particularly in demand?

German companies are looking for employees in virtually all areas of industry, whether skilled workers or engineers. The following areas are particularly in demand:

  • Raw material extraction
  • Production and manufacturing
  • Natural sciences
  • Information technology
  • Air transport
  • Energy technology

There are also many thousands of job openings outside of industry, especially in these sectors:

  • Agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry
  • Horticulture
  • Construction
  • Architecture
  • Surveying and building technology

In the skilled trades, women and men are lacking especially in:

  • Bakeries
  • Carpentry workshops
  • Electrical companies

Many vacancies are also reported in:

  • Health and care
  • Teaching and education
  • Social affairs

Are people from abroad eligible for these jobs?

Definitely yes. This is not only the view of the companies and the government, but also of the employees in Germany. According to a recent KfW survey, 83 percent of the population think that efforts to attract skilled workers from abroad should continue as before, and almost half think efforts should be stepped up.
