Fighting terror and war with a brighter future is an important aim of the Leadership for Syria programme. Scholarships for the programme were awarded by the
German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and are being funded by Germany’s Federal Foreign
Office. The winter semester 2015/16 saw a total of 271 Syrian students
enrol for degree courses at German universities. The scholarship holders have all completed a four-month German language course and now attend seminars on the subject of good governance alongside their degree courses. The DAAD first announced its programme in October 2014 – and received more than 5,000 applications.
