“In my job you need a lot of patience
and empathy – you often have to console
people and still their fears. During our training in Berlin, we learned how to best respond to elderly people’s needs. In Vietnam, there is no training in geriatric care – most elderly people live with their families. I was a nurse and once read on the
Internet that Germany has a shortage of caregivers. Through a programme organised by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), I took a five-month German course in Hanoi and then came to Berlin for training. The city is pleasantly noisy and chaotic – quite to my liking. One day, while watching a film,
I heard the saying: “You snooze, you lose”.
I couldn’t get that out of my head. That’s why, after completing my training, I wanted to look for something new again, and am now working at a nursing care centre in Eichenau near Munich. It’s a very leafy area, and very quiet. That’s something I’ve really come to appreciate.”
