Castellucci: No stable international order without human rights
On Human Rights Day, Castellucci and Wadephul highlight the importance of global solidarity and commitment to human dignity.
Berlin (d.de) – To mark Human Rights Day today, Germany’s Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Assistance Lars Castellucci has reiterated one key promise: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”. Castellucci warned that human rights were currently “under considerable pressure” around the world, with authoritarian actors attempting to “relativise or roll back human rights standards”.
He said that this was particularly evident in current crises such as in the Sudan, where millions of people were affected by hunger, displacement and gross human rights violations, and in Ukraine, where international law was being blatantly violated. Defending human rights principles was a “prerequisite for a stable and reliable rules-based international order,” he added.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stressed: “Protecting human dignity and fundamental human rights is the core task of our constitution, and thus also a crucial guiding principle for our foreign policy.” He said that he paid tribute today “to the courage of those all over the world who fight for human rights”.
