Santa Marta (dpa) - Heads of state and government from the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) will be meeting in the Colombian coastal city of Santa Marta today (Sunday) for their fourth summit. The aim is to improve cooperation on energy, climate change and international security.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas are among those expected to attend the meeting. Germany will be represented by Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul . “From diversifying our supply chains to cooperating on the extraction and processing of key resources, from digital technologies to skilled labour – our opportunities for cooperation are huge, we just have to seize and take advantage of them,” Wadephul said ahead of his departure.

All 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries, with a total population of over 600 million people, are members of CELAC, which was established in 2011.

CELAC and the EU combined represent more than a billion people - 14 percent of the global population - and 21 percent of global economic output.
