Federal Government concerned over military drills
China’s exercises around Taiwan are said to be heightening tensions and undermining stability.
Berlin (AA/dpa) – Germany’s Foreign Office has voiced concern over China’s latest military exercises around Taiwan. “The drills are raising tensions and undermining stability in the Taiwan Strait,” a spokesperson said. “Peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are of strategic importance for regional and international security and prosperity. Any change to the status quo must take place peacefully and by mutual consent.” The Federal Government said it was calling for restraint and dialogue.
According to Taiwan’s defence ministry, 130 sorties by Chinese military aircraft and drones were recorded around the island within a single day up to Tuesday morning – the second-highest figure for such a period.
China launched the manoeuvres on Monday under the codename “Justice Mission 2025”. Beijing described the exercises as a “serious warning” to “separatist forces”.
