Germany and Canada seek to deepen their partnership
Federal Chancellor Merz hosted a visit by Canadian Prime Minister Carney in Berlin. Their talks focused on closer cooperation in the area of economic affairs and foreign policy.

Berlin (d.de) – Following their meeting at the G7 summit in Calgary, Canada, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has invited Prime Minister Mark Carney to Berlin. The two leaders emphasised their intention to deepen economic and foreign policy cooperation, particularly in the fields of defence and raw materials.
“Germany and Canada share a broad range of common interests and values. For this reason, we agree that we want to intensify our cooperation further,” said Merz.
They also underlined their shared commitment to supporting peace and security in Ukraine. “This is only possible through strength and sanctions against Russia – and of course it also means we must strengthen the Ukrainian armed forces,” said Carney.
In connection with Canada’s plans to modernise its submarine fleet, Carney yesterday visited the Kiel shipyard TKMS. The company hopes to secure a major defence contract for the construction of conventional submarines for Canada.
Merz also received Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever in Berlin yesterday. The two leaders expressed scepticism about tapping the Russian central bank assets frozen in the EU, citing legal concerns.
