Belém (dpa/d.de) – Germany’s Minister for the Environment Carsten Schneider has arrived in Belém in Brazil for the COP30 global climate conference, at a time when Germany is further specifying its contributions to global climate action. The Brazilian Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF) initiative is a key focus. Schneider announced that Germany would name a specific sum “as soon as possible”. The fund is designed to reward countries which protect their rainforests and impose sanctions on those which destroy forests.

Over the weekend Schneider visited local projects and businesses in the rainforest around Belém, including inspecting how rubber is harvested and how acai berries are gathered.

At the same time, Germany’s Federal Government is working on further key pillars of climate action. Several days ago, Secretary of State Jochen Flasbarth announced €15 million to extend modern electricity networks in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Germany has also taken a strong stance against misinformation related to the climate. Along with twelve other countries, the Federal Government signed the UN Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change and the associated Declaration on Information Integrity.
