Merz expects the Iranian regime to come to an end soon
Federal Chancellor Merz expressly condemns the violence against peaceful protesters in Iran, pointing out that the Iranian leaders were not legitimately elected by the population.
Bengaluru (dpa) – In view of the recent mass demonstrations, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz expects the current Iranian regime to come to an end soon. “If a regime is forced to resort to violence to stay in power, it is effectively over. I believe that we are currently seeing the final days or weeks of this regime,” Mr Merz said during his visit to Bengaluru in India. He pointed out that the Iranian leaders had not been legitimately elected by the population.
“The population is now standing up against this regime,” the Federal Chancellor said. He added: “I hope that there will be a way to end this conflict peacefully. The time has come for the Mullah regime to accept this.”
This issue was also being discussed with the USA, the United Kingdom and France, Mr Merz said. He continued by saying that “the Foreign Ministers have been in very close contact to be able to ensure a peaceful transition to a democratically legitimised government in Iran”.
On Monday, Friedrich Merz had already condemned the violence used by Iranian security forces against peaceful protesters, referring to it as “out of proportion” and “brutal”. Iranians have been protesting against the authoritarian rulers of the Islamic Republic for more than two weeks. Around 650 people have died, according to human rights organisations.
