Wadephul in China: talks on international responsibility and cooperation
During talks in Beijing, Wadephul has called for China to use its influence over Moscow to get the peace negotiations moving.
Beijing (dpa) – During a visit to China, Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called for Beijing to exert significantly more pressure on Russia. After a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing, he said that Moscow was only feigning a willingness to talk about an end to the Ukraine war. He added that China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, was a key player on the international stage and had considerable influence over Russia. China should use this influence to get Russia to engage in serious peace negotiations, he believes. This expectation, which he articulated not only for Germany, “but at least for all European partners, has, I believe, been heard here in Beijing today”.
To conclude his trip, Wadephul will today be visiting firms in Guangdong – including the German company Herrenknecht and the autonomous vehicle specialist WeRide.
