The professor and the prototype

Work on an alternative propulsion system is being carried out at the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

It could certainly have a simpler name. Nevertheless, the free-piston linear generator (FPLG) has enormous potential.
It offers the advantages of low production costs and environmentally friendly operation. A FPLG unit could generate electricity to extend the range of a hybrid car when the battery runs out – using petrol, diesel, hydrogen, ethanol or other biofuels much more efficiently than conventional internal combustion engines. Engineers at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) are currently working on a prototype. Würzburg-based professor and investor Manfred Gröger believes this type of engine could eventually even power ships.
