European countries: Navalny died of nerve toxin
Germany and four other European countries accuse Russia of using a nerve toxin to kill Kremlin critic Navalny two years ago.
Munich (dpa) – Analyses show that opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died in a Russian prison two years ago, was killed by the nerve toxin epibatidine. According to a joint statement released by Germany, France, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom: “Russia claimed that Navalny died of natural causes. But given the toxicity of epibatidine and reported symptoms, poisoning was highly likely the cause of his death. Navalny died while held in prison, meaning Russia had the means, motive and opportunity to administer this poison to him. Russia’s repeated disregard for international law and the Chemical Weapons Convention is clear.”
Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said he was shocked by the findings. “We never had any illusions about the nature of the Russian regime, but these findings, which we obtained together with partner nations, really shocked me,” said Wadephul. Two years after the death of the Kremlin opponent, people in Russia and many other countries are today remembering the opposition leader. According to his team, commemorative events are planned in more than 20 states, including in numerous cities in Germany.
