Berlin (dpa) – Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen visited Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin yesterday (photo). The meeting was characterised by a broad consensus on various political issues. Both politicians stressed that Germany and Denmark were not only "good neighbours but also allies and friends". They stressed that both countries stood side by side with Ukraine and would like to intensify the sanctions against Russia.

Merz described Denmark as a "role model in migration policy," adding that the two countries planned to "act jointly to establish new and stricter asylum rules in the European Union". He went on by saying that Denmark and Germany also wished to "intensify and accelerate" their cooperation in the area of energy policy, for example in network development and hydrogen projects.

Concerning the claims for ownership of Greenland expressed by US President Donald Trump, Merz said: "The principle of the inviolability of borders is enshrined in international law and non-negotiable."

Frederiksen pointed out that the sovereignty of states was a core element of the world order and that any attacks on such fundamental principles and values were unacceptable. The future of Greenland could only be determined by Greenland's population, she stated.
