Chemnitz holds grand finale to mark end of Capital of Culture year

Chemnitz (d.de) – Chemnitz is holding a programme of festivities this weekend to mark the end of its year as 2025 European Capital of Culture. From culture and gastronomy to encounters, the finale of the city’s year as a Capital of Culture offers an opportunity to experience the many different sides of Chemnitz.
The year has brought in over 2 million visitors, organisers said. A total of just under 2,000 musical, artistic and participative projects took place. Mayor of Chemnitz Sven Schulze stressed that this year Chemnitz had seen “how much is possible if you don’t just consume culture but create it together.”
Although Chemnitz will be giving up its title as a European Capital of Culture 2025, the year will not be a one-off event. Many of the projects developed in the context of the Capital of Culture programme are designed to be permanent and will shape the city and the region well beyond 2025. A “legacy process” concluding at the end of 2026 is designed to culminate in a programme for 2027–2031.
